Northwich has excellent communications by road, rail, air, sea and inland waterways.

Road Network - The M6 motorway lies five-and-a-half miles to the east of the town. The M56 motorway is six miles to the north. The town is served by numerous main routes. Primary route A556, Chester to Altrincham, joins the M6 and M56 motorways. At Altrincham the Metro Link takes you through the centre of Manchester and onto Bury, Lancashire. The class 'A' roads A533, Middlewich to Runcorn and A559, Northwich to Warrington, pass through the town joining the M56 motorway.

Rail - There are two stations within the town boundary - Northwich and Greenbank - on the London-Midland line from Manchester to Chester. Hourly trains operate (less often on Sundays) serving stations to Chester (with connections for North Wales) and for stations via Knutsford, Altrincham and Sale to Manchester (Oxford Road). Hartford Station is just beyond the town's western edge and is served by frequent electric services to Winsford and Crewe (connections for London, Euston) and to Runcorn and stations to Liverpool and Glasgow. Air - Manchester International Airport is 13 miles to the east, and Liverpool John Lennon Airport is 15 miles to the northwest. Hawarden Airport, with executive flight facilities and light cargo handling is 18 miles to the west.

Ports and Waterways - Northwich sits astride the River Weaver which is a navigable river. Above Winnington the river will allow passage by craft of up to 600 tons, with a maximum width of 40 ft and 9 ft 6 in loaded draught.

The River Weaver joins the Manchester Ship Canal at Sutton Weaver, eight miles northwest of Northwich, which in turn gives access into the River Mersey at Eastham, three miles north of Ellesmere Port.
